Tom Wood of Greenacres Farm in the Chew Valley is one of, if not the youngest packer/producer I have. Tom, currently 28 years old, started his business when he was 24. His family has a deep history in the egg industry. His father Peter was a producer for 55 years with cage and free range eggs but gave up production in 2012 when the cage ban came into place. Peter still trades under Fairash Farm but buys all his eggs in from local producers including Tom. His cousin Dan Wood currently runs Blackacre Eggs.
When Tom left school he became involved in his fathers business and when the cage ban started to become reality Tom realized that there would be more of a demand for free range eggs. With that in mind he decided to renovate two of the original free range units which had been empty for many years and put them together to make one 4000 bird unit. From there he then invested in a new 4000 bird McGreggor shed.
Tom and his partner Becky run the two sites with a flock of Lohman and a flock of Hyline. Tom’s focus of the business is very much based on the quality of the product. The aim is to try and get the eggs collected, packed and delivered on the same day to provide the freshest eggs possible. With demand high for free range eggs, Tom continues to investment in his business, whether it is increasing the overall flock size or looking to grade and pack the eggs on site to make the business more efficient (currently uses his father’s grader/packer at Fairash Farm up the road). Sometimes Tom has to buy in eggs and these are sourced as locally as possible. With Tom being very focused on his egg quality, food shopping with Becky is a bit of a nightmare. As soon as he enters the supermarket he’s off to the egg aisle making comparisons and she never sees him again! When asked what gives him business satisfaction he said seeing people buying his eggs puts a smile on his face.
The farm is a very tidy and well run and the level of bird welfare is always at a maximum.
We offer our congratulations to Tom and Becky who have just announced that they are expecting their first child in January so we wish them the best of luck for the future.
