The ones that calve easily, milk well and hold to service are rarely accidents. Their performance was shaped long before first calving. It all began back in the calf shed.

Yet the nutrition of calves after colostrum often slips down the priority list. Milk replacer gets attention, but ‘starter’ cake intake, water supply and post-weaning management are frequently treated as secondary details.

The result is predictable:

  • Slow rumen development
  • Growth checks at weaning
  • Underweight heifers
  • Reduced lifetime performance

The first six months of life are some- times viewed as a cost to control. In reality, they are the foundations of the entire herd.

Milk supports early growth, but milk alone does not build a functional rumen. Because milk bypasses the rumen via the oesophageal groove, calves only develop rumen capacity when they ferment solid feed. Without sufficient starter intake, rumen papillae growth is limited, absorption is reduced, and weaning becomes a bottleneck.

Many disappointing weaning transitions are not feed formulation problems – they are intake problems. And intake problems usually reflect how the feeding is managed.

Water is another massive factor. Milk does not hydrate the rumen and does not support fermentation. Without constant access to clean water, calves will not increase hard feed intake, no matter how good the starter is.

By the time milk is reduced, some calves have not developed the intake needed to support growth, and performance is already compromised.

Solution

Improving youngstock performance rarely requires complicated diets. It requires disciplined, consistent man- agement that protects dry matter intake from day one.

Key principles include:

  • Offer starter from the first days of life
  • Feed little and often to keep it fresh
  • Remove stale or damp feed daily
  • Provide clean, palatable water at all times
  • Avoid over-feeding forage before weaning
  • Wean based on intake, not age

Starter intake drives rumen dev- elopment, not milk. Fermentation of carbohydrates produces volatile fatty acids, particularly butyrate, which stimulate rumen papillae growth and increase absorptive capacity.

Feed structure also matters. Dusty or very fine feeds reduce palatability and increase the risk of acidosis, while slightly coarser feeds encourage steady fermentation.

Fibre helps, but it’s not the driver for rumen function. It does however encourage chewing, salivation and the development of rumen muscles to cope with the ‘stretch’.

Protein sources should match the calf’s stage of development.

Milk protein must suit monogastric digestion, while starter protein should support rumen microbial growth.

As the calf matures, dry matter intake becomes the main driver of growth, not theoretical diet specifications.

Weaning should only occur once calves are consistently consuming high levels of starter, typically close to 2 kg per day.

Discussion

From weaning to six months, the biggest risk is not underfeeding – it is introducing complexity too early.

Common mistakes include:

  • Early silage inclusion
  • Diluting energy density
  • Inconsistent concentrate supply
  • Multiple stressors at weaning

During this period, concentrate should remain the main nutrient source while the rumen continues to develop. Straw and fibre can support rumen function, but forage should be introduced gradually.

This stage should feel steady and predictable. Consistent intake means consistent growth.

Calves are not small cows. They are developing digestive systems, building absorptive capacity and setting their lifetime performance.

Healthy lactations do not begin at calving – they begin in the calf shed.
